The Marlboro Archipelago

The Venkage Clos inhabits a tropical mountain range jutting out of the Balmung Sea. Marlboro Archipelago is a modestly sized group of islands with a single large island with a number of smaller ones within its gulf. The mountain range’s curvature creates a strong underwater current through the islands with temperate waters and a great surfing season. It is tropical with an abundance of trees and forests, hills and valleys across the whole island nation. The Venkage treasure their island of wild extremes and inhabit every inch of it that they can. Because of their remoteness from the rest of Vescrutia and the strong currents that envelop the island, they are mostly isolated from the rest of the world, many of them blissfully unaware of the workings of the world at large. There are a certain ancestral places of importance to the Venkage, but those places are far and few between. They have everything they need on the island and don’t care to ask for much more if their families and friends are safe and sound.

Their main island is The shape of the mountains and islands makes a jagged crescent around a gulf holding a few smaller islands, tinier peaks poking above the water. The underwater current and shape of the mountains that have made it above the water’s surface create a permanent rain shadow on the “back half” of the main island, Cornas. It rages in a hellish storm that sweeps anyone and anything into the squall if they dare to try to navigate it.

The People

The Venkage live relatively simply, farming and cultivating the land to their needs. They are mostly vegetarian, eating the fruits and vegetables that come straight form the island and raise a few forms of livestock for clothing and the occasional meat dish. Their clothing is light and airy, since temperatures are steadily warm and tropical, and everything is handmade. They take pride in their craft, showing their personal flair and technique in the intricate patterns they learn to weave into their clothing and the tools they make. Family units divide up work on their homesteads and treat them like games to help the days keep from dragging on. Their lightheartedness lends them to being exceptionally good at dealing with their wild neighbors, even the predators that navigate the wilds around them. Not often are they subject to maulings or attacks from their wild brethren since they don’t compete for space or resources with them, although their livestock isn’t always so fortunate.

Their laid back demeanor is seen to be a direct result of their unique climate, while they enjoy mostly clear and bright skies during the day with gentle breezes and ample resources. In the gulf, life is good and everybody loves it. Their gracious demeanor can also be attributed to their understanding of the country’s climate, since the “back half” of the range is battered almost constantly with gale force winds and a raging storm sweeping down its slopes. It makes them appreciate the simpler facets of life, being so close to a much less appealing environment. Still, it’s part of their island and they live where things are habitable, teaching their young to stay away from that part of the country lest they be snatched up, never to be seen again.

Venkage can bond in pairs or groups as adults and produce lovely offspring with whatever configuration they choose. Venkage childhood is short and sweet, growing from an infant to a fully competent young person by age 10. Their next decades are spent in their adulthood where some Venkage are still kicking at two centuries old, but certain myths tell of individuals who may have reached millennia.

The Society

The Venkage live simply and freely around the island. They don’t have much use for money, but value more connections and assistance from their fellow people. The families eat together at sundown often with their neighbors, sharing the bounty with their local community. The Oro, regarded as the oldest and wisest of their communities are the leaders of thought in the Archipelago. Their group has existed since the island has been mentioned of in their historical record as those who show the way. The Oro have been credited with showing the Venkage how to manage the land and the island’s resources in a way that does not disturb the harmony of the island’s other inhabitants. The Oro have established a special faction they grow from individuals that show exceptional strength or intellect, putting them through a special program to grow their skills for the good of the commonwealth. The Alsace help the older Venkage manage their day to day activities and take on deflection duties during the very short, but terribly destructive rainy season.

The Oro and Alsace have access to powerful Arbiter Houses that most of the Venkage Clos have no idea they can access. Still, an innate ability can blossom and these Houses show themselves in people naturally. Those individuals are especially targeted for Alsace membership once discovered, to make sure they are taught the proper way to harness their new skills and preserve the line. Families are proud to have their offspring as part of Alsace, but often complain about the frequency that they see their fortunate family after being indoctrinated. Most see them just once every few years, as their lives are dedicated to the commonwealth and the Oro control their enrichment.

The days are long and bright, the nights typically clear and full of stars, and the Venkage do their best to treasure every moment. No matter how beautiful their idyllic island habitat seems, they suffer from a special type of naivety endemic to a society closed off for the most part from the rest of the world. They accept what they can see as truth, the physical presentation of an idea makes them more likely to believe it. They have three sacred spaces on the island they go to for more esoteric guidance, asking for signs from beyond when the life in front of them doesn’t produce answers. They’re benevolent people who only wish for the best for their people.

Shadows on the Water

Although the Venkage are a generally jovial community, there is a hanging sense that hangs over certain houses. Occasionally, people just disappear without a trace. No blood, no bone, no notice, adults and children are both subject to the Shadow on the Water, the colloquial name given to the force that takes their people from them.

The island’s wilderness is rough, but not unforgiving. It is also well documented and mapped by the Venkage, with few spaces left unturned in their development of the island. The waters are deep and lively, but the Venkage are adept swimmers by the time they’re a year old. Even the conscription of the Alsace and their relative distance from the day to day of Cornas can’t explain how some of the individuals have gone missing. The Oro attribute the phenomenon to a specific sect of shadowy individuals, their name kept private as not to invite them with its utterance, stating that the Venkage have been a target of the strange organization since ancient times. Their homeland’s location is said to be chosen by Bellamere to escape a similar, sinister force, but those claims are told as legend and shrouded in uncertainty.
