Scarlet Night: Call of the Carnivorous Moon

The maaluuki woods teem with many life forms. The name was given to the woods by the native species, an evolutionary descended of Vescrutian moth. Maaluuki have heightened
senses and extra sensory abilities, they prevent travelers from finding their homes with esp abilities.

Hell...gate?

It seemed to flutter about his mind. It stirred something in him, something that tickled his interest. He had known of them through the memories of the orc. Though he never met one himself Bora had heard their names spoken amongst the tavern folk. The rulers of this kingdom, a family of oddballs and by the look of this Nagase girl it was safe to say her claims to the family were checking out.

"Of what concerns the Astral I care not..."

He said sliding to a defensive stance, his nails sharp enough to make mincemeat out of most forms of flesh. The already terrified townspeople stammered away for fear these two beings would clash here in this very village. Normally he would not have cared, but they were remnants of the orc pride still beating in Allen's chest. He was wary of this Hellgate, but there was no guarantee he would be able to take her on without using the full extent of his powers...of which would differently kill the natives. His cat-like peeper shifted between her and the fumbling idiot tripping over himself. He rolled his eyes, he held his arm from reaching out as her energy manifested. The more she spoke the more curious he became, his desire to speak with the wood would be respected. If she was so concerned about the Choas and what they deserved she could not also risk the lives of these folks. He would be heard.

"Although... I guess I could have some business there..."

He said as his eyes narrowed. He stared at her, his glare giving nothing but devotion in his next words.

"But not before I speak with the wood... After and only after I have done that to the Astral I will go."

His naten began to gradually to saturate his form he did not take his eyes off her. Life essence encompassed his frame its slight vermillion hue radiating off his body. Choices, Bora had chosen to lay down his life for human kind. He had chosen

" Speaking of choices you really care about the Chaos comply, though, on your abilities I may not be solid in my knowing, I can assure you if we engage this village will perish...I do not wish this, nor to sully the Orcs wish to protect these flickers of dust..."

That was no threat, he may not know much of his abilities nor the true scope or origins, but he knew enough to know these villagers would not survive a clash of the two. Allen by instinct despite this soft gesture of compromise holistically found the specs to be inconsequential. But for now, at least, they served as some form of a bargaining tool. If they failed, then they died, that blood would be spilled by two this time and not just Allen alone. His body relaxed as he again slipped into a defensive stance. His naten dug itself into the earth and began to weave itself into the ground like rich fertilizer.

"Again, if you please, joining is a choice, forfeiting the lives of these people is another."

It was a gamble but it would reveal whether her intentions were in truth and give more light to who she was a person what he cared for....what she valued.

"What will it be Nagase?"

Hell...gate?
“Ahhh. Our reputation precedes us, especially on this land, we’ve been an authority in this continent for centuries.”

She teased. Her eyes returning to normal, no longer bursting with naten.

“However...cunning you may be, I’m calling your bluff.”

-She snapped her finger and released a wave of naten across the town. Those hiding in their homes, rushing towards the borders and observing the conversation stopped moving.

For the first time in a few minutes the town was silent, even the animals fell to silence.-

She’d seized their minds, there weren’t many of them, fifty or so, give or take;but, they were all ensnared to her tune.

In unison, they stepped away from the area and began running, at much greater speeds than they normally could without her grip-giving Allen and Nagase the floor.

“This happens quite often, actually, hostage situations are just the beginning of my day. Not to mention, I frequent this town, unfortunately for you, huh?

I come here to test my Psionic grip, a term I fabricated to guage how quickly I can subdue the cognitive functions of living beings.

It’s interesting, really. You see, grabbing hold of swarms of minds like these, isn’t as challenging as subduing an individual mind - like yours.

Complex organisms like yourself would put me through the hell and hot water...true conflict.’

-She snapped her fingers towards the end of her sentence, releasing her grip over their minds;but, by then they’d have put a fair distance between the two.-

“The floor is ours. Do you care to dance at all?’’

-She moved out of Allen’s way, by stepping more into the center of the town. It allowed Allen to leave, something he’d been trying to do since he woke up.

Yet, on the other hand the short, pushy maiden was subtly challenging him.

“To the Wood or...’’

That's was starting to bother him, her ability to read his thoughts. He hadn't put any effort to hide them because he didn't want to seem like he was hiding anything. Beings who were able to use naten to perform psychic feats. The Orc had dealt with similar such beings. She obviously was one, a skilled one to take hold of so many minds at once. But Allen could sense she was so much more. She...halted their cognitive functions yet imbued them with that same energy and allowed them to unconsciously tap their latent physical potential? His mind's eye rolled back in time to the Advent. His dealings with the Orc how it was one of the first things his instincts also told him to do to subdue his prey. That night was still hazy he only could recall a few solid experiences. Flickering in and out his train of thought like a mocking spirit or reminder. She was adept in her understanding, much more than he. He was still figuring out the depths of his abilities and what he could even do. She must've understood the root of her origins, and with that came the confidence to control the situation. Who...who was this Nagase? More and more he was becoming intrigued by her. A vibrant crimson flame...she was beautiful...but equally dangerous.

She had no interest in fighting him? She was just feeling him out....testing how feral he was. Well, she would find that typically Allen was a being of solitude. Had it not been for the advent he might've not even drifted so far from his den... he shook the uncertainty from him. What was known was known and what was not soon would be. He rose, taking himself out of his defensive. His naten flowing back into him. That wave of essence she release, he could feel the potency of her command of it. She was right, had he been anyone else he would have been taken over just as they were. But that even sparked more of a need to return home and convene with the word. Before today his questions were simple, only wanting to learn about the native plant life tad the world around him. However, this conversation would be much different. This time he knew the right questions to ask. He just hoped she would give him the answers. He would waste no time... she stood aside, he walked forward his wits still about him.

" Very well to the wood we go then but keep in mind, my thoughts are my own creature."

He said as he began to walk out of the village. She was pushy but she had the means to back it up, Respect. She needed to stay in her own head though. The next time she would be met with much more resistance.

" The Chaos, of its origins and standing I know little save for the tavern. The Orc...Bora frequented there a lot during his trek across the mother. Tell me of it, if this pleases you."

He trusted her a bit more knowing she truly did not wish him harm. That and she was willing to let him go back home before going to her homeland. No doubt more so because he wanted to know more of him, that was fine, the feeling was mutual. It wasn't long before the village was at their backside and they were swallowed by the cover of both the night and the trees of the forest.

The wind rustled her black linen cloak, blowing it about as she stood in wonder of Allen. She could have guessed he’d chose the path of least resistance, who wouldn’t- save for the rebellious warriors of the Vesta family.
Very well to the wood we go then but keep in mind, my thoughts are my own creature.
‘Privacy is an illusion awarded to some, Allen;but, not all of us.’

She said, not hiding her disdain at the notion of boundaries.
" The Chaos, of its origins and standing I know little save for the tavern. The Orc...Bora frequented there a lot during his trek across the mother. Tell me of it, if this pleases you."
“It’s only going to get weirder if you keep referencing information you acquired from the Orc you...ate.

But, if I were to ignore the overwhelming energy of alien life form you’re putting out, I’d say...Astral City is Beautiful.

Stone temples overrun by foliage, hidden by the forest and fortified by the Azure Alps. The final bastion against the apocalypse.”

She followed Allen out of the town, jabbering on and on about the wonders and uniqueness of Astral City, she had a certain warmth, particularly unseen up until this point.

" I ask of this from a respectful place, My thoughts...I am still fiddling through them, choosing what to believe and what to abandon, I do not need the meddling of your naten. They are still being separated from the kins. You've shown yourself not to be a threat to my life at least not at this moment, things you seek to know of me, I will answer from my mouth, as best as I can...It will grant you more than my mind is able, of this be certain"

Illusion, reality. In Allen current placing both were just as tangible as the other. Privacy wasn't the problem, respect...boundries were.

“It’s only going to get weirder if you keep referencing information you acquired from the Orc you...ate.
"His knowledge of the world outside these woods are my only link to your world. I..."

He fell silent for a moment, remembering the past few weeks of consciousness, how he bore no memories of life beforehand. N understanding of his path be it past nor future, his present shrouded in ambiguity.

"Life outside the last few weeks I cannot recall. The Wood, it has gifted me with only surface answers, beneath the tip of the iceberg where it root connect lies the truth. must know of it."

Time seemed to fade as they made their way through the Maalukian woods. He listed to her speak for the Astral, he could only guess just how beautiful it was, it seemed to him to be a haven of sorts. She spoke of its buildings the Arena and many trivia surrounding it, his worldly sense and curiosity began to get the better of him. He...wanted to see this place with his own two eyes...but this apocalypse, what did it refer to? That phrase caused his spirit to grow uneasy, something about that word...jumbled his heart. It pained him...it held context, something very dark, but he could not halt. As they pressed on the plant life that littered the woodland floors brought a small smirk to Allen's face. Flowers all kinds of colors were spread all aboard. He never tired of this place, he felt he could wander this plane for eons. He was content. But...he felt tainted...he had been made aware and with that, erased the chance for him to go back to the life he had as a mere member of this ecosystem. His place as a predator had been staked. But he had never fed on the creatures of this place. The Wood had taught him how to circumvent his need to sustain himself by using naten. So what about the scarlet night...what about Bora made him lose control?

"Nagase...you bore witness to the Scarlet night just as I...express to me, how did it make you feel."

She was there, he wanted to know how she felt under its embrace, if it was at all like his experience and if it was, what about it tethered them together so? There was a tie, a bond, he wanted to start hypothesizing what that could be. As they left the field of iridescence behind they began to enter deeper parts of the growth. Eventually, they came across it...the place where the incident occurred. The land was...changed, the once green foliage was now stained by a sanguine intensity reminiscent of that night. What's more, the once more docile denizens of the wood were now more brave, less frightened and more aggressive than before. They did not flee yet they did not engage. Staying clear of the two beings strolling through, they could feel their vibes, Allen and Nagase surely weren't to be fucked with.

They eventually came across the center of the bout. The land still recovering as bare patches of earth could be still seen within the small crater...and when there a large skeleton laid, completely void of all flesh. Its chest cavity had been caved in. He stared at it, enamored...was...was this what remained of...Bora?

They strolled through the Maalukian woods, the change in the foliage wasn’t subtle. There was a clear line between the lush green foliage and the now earthly auburn fire engulfing the leaves and grass.

She was quite overwhelmed by the change, though she hid the emotion, near perfectly- save for a brief moment of surprise that arose in her eyes.

The air was warm, pushed by a soft breeze that rustle the leaves. The patter of their footsteps and the shaking leaves were the only sounds heard. She wondered if the animals were somehow changed by the lunar activity of the Scarlet moon, but didn’t stay there for long as Allen’s voice rang out, breaking her from her reverie.
I ask of this from a respectful place, My thoughts...I am still fiddling through them, choosing what to believe and what to abandon, I do not need the meddling of your naten. She hid her anger, the audacity of his Levite’s;but, she minded her temper. He wasn’t the first to make such a stance and he wouldn’t be the last- men and their rules.

‘Your words fall on deaf ears my new friend, but I’m sure Bora is more than willing to listen to your ideology about respect, privacy and the sanctity of life.’

She said in her typically nonchalant and yet somehow equally combative tone.
"Life outside the last few weeks I cannot recall. The Wood, it has gifted me with only surface answers, beneath the tip of the iceberg where it root connect lies the truth. must know of it."

Sanctity of life had nothing to do with it but yet he would not further encourage the sentiments behind his statement. He would not repeat himself. He stared at the corpse less concerned with her tone and more in the process of reliving the flashes of the scarlet night. Brief mental spurts of flowing streams of blood spontaneously popped in his mind. He grabbed the right side of his face. He grunted in disbelief. Had he really done something so terrible? She lies though, she was too in tune with herself too comfortable with her naten to not remember the invasive sensations that came with that night. But he remained coy regulating his thinking trying to paint a solid painting. As she inquired of the wood he began to retract himself from his thinking. Her change in tone did echo. Allen was still grasping the gravity of what happened that night. Emotions tied to his overtaking of Bora were...complex. He only felt the sense of remorse because everyone else around him seemed to be so impacted by it, this sense of morality was new to him. In its most basic understanding, he was, uncomfortable with these feelings. Sensing he had done something wrong, but it felt instinctual and in response my something hed never experienced.

As he turned his focus on how he could explain to a being like her what The Wood was, what it represented. He reflected on the common tongue. it would just be too much easier to show her. She did, he supposed, had a point concerning his right to privacy. He would disclose. He gathered himself once more and turned over to her.

"The Wood is something that is hinged deeply to the spirit of these woods. It is an expression, a voice for nature, a tool."

He walked over to a luscious flower ripe with the red cha from the advent. He leaned down and rubbed it soft thick petals. The foliage though changed was flourishing in a way he had not seen when he first came to.

"It has existed life first donned n Vescrutia, it is known as many things. Natures vocalist. Vescrutia messenger. It has witnessed the changes and shifts of this world...tethered to all life."

He stood now watching the other woodland critters scurry about. They wrestled vigorously and heavily once could mistake it for a territorial bout. He turned back to Nagase his face giving a look of Concern.

"It was there when I first drew conscious breathe. It told me nothing f my origin only that I was not of this forest. I smelled of something...dangerous. But I wonder....if of the Scarlet Nights it was aware."

His look became softer

"Nagase...what I did to Bora...was..was I wrong?"

He didn't know why he asked her this, perhaps because she was the ly human he ever spoke to this much. Because maybe her blunt challenging nature provoked such reflections...

Allen’s explanation of The Wood only left the young Hellgate with more questions. The wood sounded less of a place and more like an entity, but the young Hellgate found it troubling that she hadn’t heard of its existence prior to this moment.
"It was there when I first drew conscious breathe. It told me nothing f my origin only that I was not of this forest. I smelled of something...dangerous. But I wonder....if of the Scarlet Nights it was aware."
‘Are you hinting that the Wood is your mother or the only thing that could explain what....manner of life you are?’

She wanted to make sense of all of this, the murder of Bora, the Scarlet moon and Allen’s true nature;but, it was difficult to listen to a creature who seemed equally lost and found.
"Nagase...what I did to Bora...was..was I wrong?"
She waited before responding. She hadn’t expected him to be so forward with his vulnerability.

“That’s a fair question. I’ve only judged you, openly no less, about Bora. Truth is their is no objective answer, not at this moment. I’m sure Bora’s friends would brand you a monster and his enemies would exalt you. Right and wrong can be quite subjective.

Yet...objectively speaking, he is dead and you killed him, no? Or are you searching for answers on that aswell? You...are aren’t you? You don’t know why you killed him?’’

She fell silent, watchful of Allen and her surroundings. Allen’s voice rang out on her head, a moment ago Allen asked her what she felt from the moon.

‘The scarlet moon urged my senses into a frenzy, I felt strong cravings;but, I often feel this way at night. Very energetic and sometimes mischievous, but the other night, under the blood red scarlet night ...I felt...different.’

"My Mother?"

He pondered this but it was a swift dismissal. He had seen The Wood. It was ancient far more than he but radiated a natural beauty that left/ him in a trance every time he witnessed its presence. Kinship between him and The Wood. No, not by how it treated him. Like an outsider or a guess that would soon wear out his welcome. Furthermore, though, the being he spoke of he could not speak of its gender for it never took a gender-specific form. It was a being that seemed to fluctuate expression as fluently as the changing seasons it reflected.

"No...Neither of those things...If I am anything to the wood I'm a burden. Though it like you haven't killed me for the same curiosity. It also wishes to know...just from where I come. And to quickly send me back there."

He said as a gentle breeze fluttered through the expanse of the scarlet drenched forest area. It carried a slight fragrance of lavender that he always enjoyed. It brought him peace, it was as this breeze subsided that she gave an answer to his question. He...he didn't know why he took the life of that Orc. All he knew was hungry, the overwhelming sense of overcoming the obstacle that thrust itself before him. Bora,fr fear Allen wouldve killed the village risked his life. But to Allen, the mighty warrior spirit he displayed, the blood lust Bora gave off made Allen want to crumble him into nothing. To smother his flame until there was nothing left...that was something he had never felt before....and it made him take life for the first time. But it felt...sooo good. Perhaps that was the contradiction. Perhaps that was why his sense of morality was jumbled...

"Nagase..."

Each time he said her name he wanted to know more of its origins. This crimson ball of nature that was insistent on following him around, pondering his thoughts. He was becoming, fond of her company. She was fierce, direct, sharp of tongue. But there was a genuineness in that, something that he felt came from her own unwavering will.

"The Scalet moon made me kill Bora..."

He clenched his fist looking towards the sky. His memories of that night settling in. What happened before he blacked out.

"I heard a voice, in the deepest parts of my mind it echoed, as the moon became ripe with sanguine light it became a thundering voice that almost felt like I was being commanded...I cannot recall its words...but the feeling...the rage it filled me with. The lust for life it poured into me was...Frightening....it...something took over me...."

He turned his back to her, sighed before his hand would be over the bones of the fallen warrior. From it his blood would pour over them seeping into the ground, saturating its soil with his essence. After a few moments, several small green products would burrow from undeath the soil. Quickly, they bloomed revealing a group of Violet flowers. Their stems intertwining between the empty spaces of his bones becoming chest as apart of him as his flesh once was.

After this deed was done he would smile, albeit a slight one. Life and death, beauty and horror. They seemed so connected, tied to one another. Was nature truly so fearsome? The wind picked up once more...

Tis a boon of your creature, tis part of the reason why you reflect danger in you merely being born.

A voice though soft it was fierce, sharp. From what direction it came from he could not tell. It seemed to resound everywhere. He stood looking to Nagase before back to his little creations. He recalled it. It was the voice of The Wood.

Tis a Hellgate that you walk with? Strange, what ties do you bear to them I wonder? Curious kitten comes further into my depths. It is the truth you seek. Direction I will give to thee...

The winds settled... He turned to Nagase...

"It calls to us, they see why we have come. Let us continue, it is just beyond the grave over yonder."

"My Mother?"
Her eyes narrowed to a slit at Allen’s back, Her mind racing with confusion about allen’s Origins was very I settling and this only added to her concern. Did he not know his mother or had he consumed her as he did Bora.

The more she thought about it the more wandering through the woods with a strange man and no one aware of her location, seemed like a bad idea. Yet, the more dangerous the situation became, the more interesting the experience was. Besides, her father never warns anyone before he disappears, she thought.

She waited before questioning him further, Allen’s words were resting on the tip of his mind, he was going to speak.
"No...Neither of those things...If I am anything to the wood I'm a burden. Though it, like you, haven't killed me for the same curiosity. It also wishes to know...just from where I come. And to quickly send me back there."
“An enigma and a mystery to yourself and the Forest, how lucky am I to wander into your life in such, tender years for you.” She said softly, reflecting on the Skelton they passed earlier. “Yet-”

After a few moments, several small green products would burrow from undeath the soil. Quickly, they bloomed revealing a group of Violet flowers. Their stems intertwining between the empty spaces of his bones becoming chest as apart of him as his flesh once was.
“Whoa there, think carefully about the implications you just gave me. You’re saying you don’t know who you are and the moon made you kill someone. Will you strike again under the moon?

I was out that night, in the woods with you to be precise. The four moons ran a deep blood red, all the animals and elves in the area felt it, I’m certain. I could feel the pure and primal energy swelling within everyone in the woods, some...where wrathfully, others were sensual, even sexual.

I didn’t see how you killed Bora, but I did hear it. I was tracking you...your naten was quite pungent, it stood out among the others. Save for the Maaluki sex rituals that the moon brought out, but...I’m no virgin to their customs.

Your naten was different, familiar even. The closer I got to you, the stronger my own urges became;but, by the time I found you...you were unconscious.

“The moon ‘told’ me to strike you while you slept, but my instincts and better judgement said otherwise. Choices. If the moon controls you so, then so will your emotions, so will I.”
"It calls to us, they see why we have come. Let us continue, it is just beyond the grave over yonder."
‘Beyond the grave,Allen? How suspect can this adventure get.’ She said mockingly as she followed him deeper into the woods.
