“It’s a manuel upload, and I already gave’em the clear. Said we disturbed some Sand Wyrm nest.. we got thirty seconds. Get dressed!”

-Savyy said, taking out a remote from beneath her cloak and tossing it to Cross.-

“Aight, so.. Only four of you survived the Sand Wyrm attack; you and Imani’ obviously are speaking for the pack.”

-After painting the brief mission scenario, Savvy rushed over to Imani and forcibly grabbed her arm. This inscribed a temporary sigil unto her arm used her own blood to carve incription. It was painful, even sizzled a bit.. but it was necessary.-

“Ah fuck!!”

-Imani instinctively snatched her arm away. The tired expression on her face demanded an explanation but her Military ettiequte kept her emotional outbursts at a minimal.-

“Sorry.. When we make the drop, Imani, I need you to apply as much Naten as you can to this mark. It’ll warp you back to Nightmare, okay? Forget about the Wyrms, Me and Cross’ll finish everything else.”

-She said, telekinetically lifting one of Cross’ LYFE syringes from their holsters and handing it to Imani. The bitch needed a raise, the least they could give her was some relief.-

“Aye’ listen.. You’ve done so much already, I’ll be damned if you die out he’a. You take this, tell Kham everything you learned.”

"We could use you to free the other hostages Imani. Who knows how occupied SILK will keep us. Or what he'll do to the others knowing we're COER. Savaj and I can hopefully keep him distracted, who knows what surveillance is in store."

Cross chimed on the back of Savaj's statement. It was true, she had already done way too much. The evidence that COER was short-staffed was showing but with that Lyfe syringe, Imani would have a second and third wind. Cross threaded her limbs through the Ferrymen robes. There was arcane technology in these fibers, stuff Cross' analytical eyes have never seen before. Things that weren't even Vescrutian. Wearing the robes felt like Cross' body was 'covering it's ears' muting itself to any and all outside influence. Even oxygen, sound, heat, were muffled. The hood seemed to interrupt Savaj and Cross' mental connection placing static between the two lessening her voice. It felt good knowing her mental space was hers again but she was almost used to having her there. Weird.

"Suit up. Can't leave you out here in the struggle. Beam us if shit gets real."

Cross chuckled at Imani's question reached in her hip pouch and pulled out an orb, pulsing with Naten. Imani took it in her palm and the nanites swam beneath her ceremonial garments covering her in the same combat suit both she and Cross wore. It came complete with a rather through arsenal and a few of Cross' personal weaponry. Now that they were all accounted for, undercover, and ready to go Miguel's laboratory just fucking appeared in a earthquaking tremor. The thing was nearly as tall as the sky itself, a network of rusted pipes and lights winding and weaving toward Vescrutia's ceiling threading in and over-itself like a thicket of thorns. It was nothing for Cross to install the physique and mannerisms of the Ferrymen to her own body after observing it and recording it on her brain. She led the pack toward the castle hoping to see just what kind of scientist abducts women, dresses them up in ceremonial robes, yet doesn't see them harmed. Imani fell in line, feigning exhaustion and dejection like the rest of the other puppets. Conveniently, Savaj gave Cross the robes with the communicator, she could install their voices to with her augmentations. And the deep grumble of a drug ridden, live for the job, type of man came out.

"Requesting Entry."

The sound of rusty hinges filled the desert ending with a large thud as the door to the laboratory fell open. Part one was complete, time for round two.

-Savvy followed behind Cross and Imani in silence. Keeping the heard of dead bodies marching in formation took more of meticulous focus than a raw output of power. It was tedious and annoying. To make matters worse, she could sense her telepathic network breaking apart the longer they dawned these robes. Of course it had a negative quality.-

“..this never happened before, but this cloak is interferring with my teleclink. We’re gonna have to go dark, keep your eyes open for any cams.”

-She whispered to the team as they stepped through the howling jaws of the laboratory. The place was enormous but she was only four seconds into the mechanical wonderland before she could feel a stagnent blood lust choking the air. Her mind was sensitive shit like this, she could feel the hundreds of other girls before them, forced to walk these eerily cold corridors to their death. It made her stomach curl, it took everything she had to stay on task.-

“I’ma try to take a quick mental sweep of the area, okay? Don’t let me walk into shit..”

"Roger. Imani cloak up."

Cross mumbled under her breath in her real voice, Imani vanished and Savaj seized possession of her robes without missing a beat. Cross was overly focused, the time for risking her life for experimental research tossed to the winds though she did gather quite a bit of data, the suit could sustain many metric tons of force, useful in a pinch but- inadequate. Many lives were at stake here. The Ferrymen had been delivering to SILK for years, and it was time to shut this place down for good. Cross put her whole arsenal to work. Every step Cross took echoed through the dark expanse. Her empty hallow taps touched the cold rusted metal beneath her feet and would give her goosebumps if she had any actual pores. She let out sweeping, scanning pulses throughout the space. She was trying to establish a coordinate grid of the area, something, anything so she wouldn't be in the dark while leaving energetic imprints on the ground, breadcrumbs she called them, to not lose track in this labyrinth of pipes.

"This place is fucking huge. Near infinite. I don't even thing this structure is real. It's like a projection of something else. A placeholder, a husk."

Cross' own Naten infested and swam through the depths of this structure, weaving and ebbing through its manifestations but found nothing, or no one for hundreds of miles on end until it finally reached a block, miles beneath the surface. Very close to Vecsrutia's core.

"I got something. Interference. Miles below where we stand."

Were they even in the Blood Dunes anymore?

That's far enough.

Came a voice from the dark depths, all encompassing yet smooth as silk. It impressed itself upon Cross' ears disarming her from her analytical surveillance of the area. Though, with her Ferrymen guise in full affect, she didn't break her composure. Filing in around the group, out of nowhere emerged Pale Faced Giant Women three times the height of Cross and Savaj, their features hollow and numb. The readings of Naten from these giant women were off the charts, extremely close to Gaia's passive output. They had no mechanical components either. Servants maybe? A new clan or faction that COER need wipe out?

You may leave the offerings and go now.

Demanded the voice again. It was time for Cross to negotiate.

"Payment. COER was onto us. Payment or we can consider this our final delivery."

And if I don't need anymore product?

"You still have to pay us! You know our boss."

Shouted Cross. The women stared their way, not even blinking. Unflinching. Imposing. Giants. Bursting at the seams with Vescrutia's power. One of the colossi opened their hand with a small bag in between her veiny palms. Cross walked over and snatched it out of her hand and stashed it beneath her cloak. Currency was rare on Vescrutia, where resources, and ideas outranked metal coins and paper. This sac was full of Thirst- a drug of raw naten and a few other lethal chems that had made COER's engagements on the criminal underworld very difficult. Was SILK the dealer, or did he just have some left over.

Now leave.

"Double."

Excuse me?

"We lost four men, you said the desert was safe during the sun fall."

I'm not privy to the behavior of insects. My condolences.

Cross stepped to one of the imposters and held a knife to their metaphorical neck. The women came alive with a fright and took a unified step inward toward the group that made Cross nearly buckle at the knees. She could feel the weight of their naten output smothering them from all sides, like they were grabbing her in all of their giant hands.

You wouldn't

"They call us the Ferrymen, because if we die the boat sinks. If you kill us, your cargo dies with us."

She was obviously bullshitting. But she knew Miguel didn't want the offerings harmed. She had to get him to show himself. Somehow.

-With Savaj temperorily tranced out, Imani’ was tasked with keeping the psychic marching and moving according to plan. Imani donned her cloak on Cross’ comand but the level of shock she experienced in the presence of those pale faced giants couldn’t be hidden. Not really anyway.-

What the fuck is that?

-She was taken aback, literally, but Imani never broke character. She straightened her spine in the face of the white demons as if she couldn’t feel their unearthly levels of Naten spilling out of their gaudy stares. But watching Cross disregard their dwarfing stature and force her agenda spiked her veins with enough adrenaline to pump her heart through her chest.-

...

-Those apprehensions clenched Imani’s gloved hand into a tight fist. She needed to help and Cross’ provocative methods gave her an idea. Her head snapped around, searching the darkness for some sort of concealed network of camera or maybe an overhead booth. Miguel was watching or aware of their presence, these ghoulish sentinels were just proxies. And Cross was right, the condition of his sheep took priority over most protocol.-

“Don’t make us ask twice..”

-Imani’s disguised voice interjected, pulling out her razor sharp dagger to recklessly press against Savaj and slice a layer of her robe open, nearly exposing her bossom and just barely nicking them. The dwarfing creatures and their intense pressure of Naten boiled over in response to Cross and Imani’ aggressive course of action but the two of them were in too deep to pull out now.-

“Get your boss out here now and we’re not fuckin’ around!”

Silence now filled the expanse, it was a silence of many parts, one of unmitigated anticipation. A classic hostage situation surrounded by so many unknowns. Surely they were being watched, surely Cross didn't know what these women were and surely SILK underestimated them all the same. But the overall lack of information made the stakes very high nonetheless. The other was the eerie silence of ever encroaching death, for the longer these Women stood close to Cross, Savaj and Imani the more Cross felt like throwing up. Household nausea couldn't cover it, her body felt like it was rejecting her. These cloaks were supposed to protect them from outside influences, but the combined presence of these colossal women, in such close proximity felt like they were pointing swords to Cross from all sides. Cross needed to upgrade the cloaks when she got back from the lab. Some of Kham's carbonfiber weave? Gaia's hair?

Never mind that. Still she kept her composure, and the silence persisted. Miguel was weighing his options and Cross was all the more thankful that Imani raised the stakes. But from the leering dead eyes of these sentinels, Miguel seemed willing to take the risk and kill them before they could harm his offerings. Until they finally took a step back, removing their proverbial heel from Cross' neck.

"What the fuck are those things."

Imani swore under her breath, panting from the pressure. Exhausted from the journey. SILK continued, the voice of God in this mysterious realm.

How shall I pay you double. It takes days to make the Thirst. The distillation process alone-

"Knowledge then."

Chimed in Imani, she was good. Damn good. Where did Kham find her? Train her in negotiation? Cross never read her file either.

Knowledge of?

"Our boss considers you a risk, and requires detailed knowledge of your experiments to keep dealing with you"

Cross finished Imani's thought. She knew scientists loved talking about themselves and what they were working on. Even she, a social recluse could talk forever about her latest projects and be irritated she was disturbed the entire time. But negotiating on this planet was extremely difficult without some base form of currency. Everyone had influence, abilities, contingencies and trump cards, so who really had the upper hand here? You never knew until the transaction was complete.

"No time for consideration!"

Imani pressed the blade deep into the hostages neck until one by one, giant canisters, surrounding Cross and the colossi illuminated themselves around the lab, numbering in the dozens, bubbling and churning in titan sized tanks. Cross was fucking stunned. These canisters contained even more Giant women, sitting in pools of pure naten. Incubated? Farmed? Hatched? This confirmed her suspicions.

"Savaj... SILK is making Anima."

"Any sign of the hostages."

Imani chimed in but Cross was way too stunned, though her cloak kept her surprise to herself. How could someone manufacture Gods?

-Savvy missed out on majority of the action but she was contributing in her own way. Despite being able to walk up right, Savaj was astrally projecting herself throughout the compound like a phantom. The fleeting vestige of her subconscious took the form of a butterfly hastily fluttering through the technological corridors, unhindered by corporal limits. In seconds, Savvy’s astral proxy traversed several hundred miles of the dark laboratory in every direction, yet she couldn’t reach anything that felt like its boarders. Zero life forms, none alive anyway. The place was far too large for them to still be in the Blood Dunes, but then Cross’ anayltical cycle of thought tipped her off big time. They were looking in the wrong place.

Savvy commanded her astral sprite south and the microsized sentinel delved into Vescrutia’s crust at full speed. It phased through layers upon layers of crimson sand, igneous rocks, and molten mantle until it ran into something. Something dense enough to impede her telepathic search and volatile enough to wildly disturb her trance. She needed to concentrate to push through the abstract barrier but upon doing so, Savaj’s astral form set eyes upon a subterranean facility where humanoid women were subjected to an enormous pool of raw Naten.

There had to be thousands of them but extending her mind this far had distorted Savvy’s astral connection to more of a fuzzy signal. Still from what she could see, the women numbered vastly in age, size, even in species, but they were all subjected to various mechanical apparatuses that painfully spliced their genetics with Miguel’s Artificially Engineered Naten Oasis. Within his controlled vats of Naten churned the DNA of prehistoric creatures capable of brining an end to modern civilization should they room the planet again. Savvy couldn’t put the science of it together yet, but Cross’ suspicions seemed spot on. The sick fucker was playing god.

Yea, I can-zzzz-s-zzzz- hundr-zzzz dow-zzzz

-She tried to relay the messgae but between the mangaing a mental link through extreme distances, telekinetically puppeteering the dead Ferrymen, Cross and Imani could barely make out anything Savvy was sending. She was a superb multitasker but she was stretching herself thin. She snapped out of her trance and found herself back in her body with the top half of her rob slashed open, leaving her cleavage open for whoever these ominous ivory ghouls were to enjoy. How long was she out? What the fuck did she miss? Imani’s orange tinted dagger pressing firmly against her neck insinuated that the operation hit another snag but she couldn’t be sure. So she played her role.

With a telepathic whip, Savaj excited the undead “sacrifices” into a unified squirm that add to the flair of the exchange. She had them shriek in danity terror from beneath their robes while she whispered what she knew into Imai’s ear. Thank Gaia she was so close to her.-

As the laboratory finished illuminating, there, in front of a tiny screen, washing his face in an emerald glow was SILK himself. A man with skin of ash, very clean shaven, a chisled jaw, short brown hair with surprisingly muscular physique for a man of science. He wore plain black baggy sweat pants with no shoes, and was rather comfortable among near endless tubes containing giant women. He was topless, his sweatpants sagging slightly below his waistline with no briefs to catch them. With his eyes glued to the screen, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a whistle, he brought it to his lips, blew it, and out came no sound. Cross looked around in confusion, expecting a shrill cry or attack order, her hands instinctually found the twins, her guns, their cold metallic grip giving her a sense of security, a feeling of invincibility. She lifted them off a marksman from the Abyss after she cut his throat, they were better used in her hands anyway.

By the time SILK took the whistle from his mouth but the Giant Women, mass produced Anima, took a step back, and systematically, like a seasoned platoon dismissed themselves into the near endless annals of the experiments. With the sudden pressure alleviated, Cross, in disguise finally took a breath, and the phony offerings stopped their wailing. Even Imaní removed her blade form Savaj’s throat and took in the scenery. Their ruse appeared to have worked so far. But Cross was crippled with worry, for a while it felt like she was being held underwater. Now how to ensure they weren’t going to drown? Her analytical brains were over working at the possibilities. She looked toward Imani who gave her a nod, SILK exposed himself, if there was any time to subdue him the time had to be now. She took a half step forward before SILK drew breath and began speaking.

“I'll be right with you, I was just going over surveillance footage.”
SILK started shaking his head and sighed. The small emerald monitor shut off thereafter, there was a sudden shift in his heartbeat. A quickening that Cross could hear as clear day. A pattern that she knew too well, adrenaline. They’d been had.

"SAVAJ STUN HI-"

Liquid filled Cross' mouth interrupting her sentence, suffocating and killing her. It was already too late she was trapped in a canister of Naten, it came from the floor and consumed her like a mousetrap. Unlike her own laboratory, this one appeared to be an extensions of SILKS consciousness. It was far too late now. Cross was trapped, her eyes looked to her left, Imani had met the same fate. The liquid power, the energy of creation flooded her bio components weaving underneath the protective cloak and overloading her, paralyzing her, drowning her in volatile juices. Her vision was going black, she was helpless.

-Savvy’s green eyes were drawn to Miguel the instant the overhead lights scattered his shadowy guise, and to be honest, the guy didn’t seem like the malicious type. Reclusive sure, obsessive and callous definitely, but malicious? She even found his appearance, albeit appealing, unbecoming for a connoisseur of depravity yet here they were thwarting one of his illegal inter dimensional shipments of women. The sick fucker was already incubating several unfortunate souls in glimmering deep blue chemical solutions so volatile its fumes fouled the air. It was feint but those toxic, seamless gases absolutely erroded the hairs lining Savvy’s nose. Searing flesh, evaporating blood. Every fiber in her being wanted to shed tears for their suffering. Savvy knew what she was getting herself into, but SILKS haunting experiments still salted some traumatic scars on her heart that burned like hell. She suddenly felt every whip and bruise the Ferrymen branded her childhood with fester and scald. It was some vile nostalgia that filled her throat with lumps thick enough to stunt her breathing. But beneath Her ceremonial mask, fury kept her balance.

She was focused on the war sundered voice of The Destroyer reminding her of their priorities. The Assignment. This was a mission bigger than her gripes and eventually that sense of duty gnawed away her unbridled rage.

..that’s our guy..

-Her warbled voice echoed through Cross and Imani’s minds. The intricate weaving of their respective robes kicked up some disturbance, but the two of them were perceptive as fuck. They nodded as if they understood.-

..and that’s my cue..

-Her eyes narrowed into daggers once SILKS thirteen foot sentinels faded into the shadows. The guy was either too confident or oafishly trusting but whatever the case, he definitely made their jobs easier. Without his Aion’s magnificent combined presence looming around him, SILKS mental vanguard was practically nonexistent. Exposed. Naked.

It only took her a moment for her psionic tentacles to squeeze through his defenses. They numbered in the near trillions; colorless, tiny, abstract, invasive extensions of Savaj’s psionic will that slit open SILKS subconscious with surgical finesse. And in the blink of her flexed, emerald oculars, Savvy was granted access to the MASSIVE astral continuum of SILKS subconscious. His memories, his blissful thoughts, darkest desires, all of him was irrigated into her psyche like a calm river but to complete the process would have taken WAYY longer than they had... If she wanted to do this painlessly.

Only a few moments would have expired in real time, but it felt like years to Savvy. Imani and Cross were to engage SILK while she spun her telepathic webs but the ash toned man was more unnerved by their performance than anticipated. He was checking the video footage. They were made.-

“Fuck! CROSS!”

-Cross’ warning throttled Savaj back into her own skin and her throat let loose on its own. Fury and fear welled puddles in her eyes watching her comrades soak and drown in the same lethal toxins that brought them here. Their inner screams scrambled their link and sent a shattering jolt down her spine that sent Savvy’s emotions into a frenzy. Her trembling fingers found the jagged tear along her robe and tore it from her chest. Her fervor drew Miguel’s tentative glance and in that instant he could every pound of her vindication. It literally paralyzed him, even the sweat dripping down hus neck was frozen in place. He didn’t have the luxury to feel the primal excitement one gets from being surprised or startled. For some reason he could only feel dread. Horror. Down to his bones and quivering nerves. He whispered, suddenly short of breath.-

”A psychic..”

-It was the only explanation. Miguel’s brilliance had been toned and sculpted by academic crucibles that could melt the minds of lesser men. His intelligence had mastered volumes of linguistics, arithmetic, physics, even cosmic cyphers rendered illegible by Vescrutia’s proudest scholars. The man knew when his greatest, most triumphant instrument had been compromised. He had contingencies but none of them were built to curb Savvy’s rage.-

“R’hleqsh”

-Miguel’s blank stare was fixed stone tight in Savvy’s existential grip until those warbled words violently stripped away every sensation he possessed. When his body did finally respond, it rebuked him. Miguel began violently convulsing until Savvy drained the life from every axon and neuron in his skull. Excrement and discharge found their exits from his corpse after his twitching body hit the floor, while Savvy turned her attention to Cross and Imani. They were soaking in SILKS compound, which she now knew to be a biological dematerializing agent crossed with Raw Naten and a catalyst Miguel developed known as.. The Source Code?

“UAGHHH!!”

-She crumbled to a knee, releasing a howl that ripped the electrical tiles from the floor. Digesting SILK’s MASSIVE psyche so half hazardly had put blood dribbling pressure on Savvy’s mind that nearly gave her a seizure. She’d done this to literally hundreds of people before but none of her prior marks had anchored a inter-dimensional sanctum to their subconscious.-

“Agh, fucking helll!!!”

-Blood spilled from her screaming lips but she crawled through the pain toward her probably dead comesdes. She rested her hands on their glass like tubes and they immediately unlocked the two of them as if Savvy had the password. But while she dragged on, Miguel’s lab was falling apart. Chronic distortions in reality were displacing large quadrants of the lab by the second, but Savaj was focused on reviving her friends.-

“C’mere.. y’all not dying on me..”

-She mumbled to her lifeless comrades before standing her feet and executing some unique telekinetic CPR. She was too engrossed with their condition to notice the SILK’s back up plan coming to fruition.-

But her Psychic CPR would ring hollow in the minds of both Imani and Cross who’s bodies were waterlogged with the breastmilk of Mother Vescrutia. In It’s purest form it was toxic for conventional consumption but The Source Code, as Savaj had ascertained was a means of equipping her children with the mutation to tap into her godliness and jettison proper subjects forward billions of years in evolution. Anima, who were random occurrences, spiritual omens, and religious figures at best were mass produced right here in this laboratory. From the looks of things: the blue haired mechanic lying unconscious, and the brown skinned soldier writhing on the floor dripping in Neon Green liquid from every orifice and crevasse, these two were failures of the test.

“Shame.”

Came a voice from nowhere and everywhere at once, it sounded equally disappointed as Savaj to find her psychic abilities fall short here. Savaj was on her own. The situation was far more dire than the livelihood of her two comrades, there were hundreds of hostages in similar tanks down below, and where was down below exactly? And where was SILK? His body had vanished.

Again the jaws of death incased these two women once more. Folding from the floor and snapping them shut in the test tubes, bubbling with the neon green juice, The Source Code. Like the jaws of death SILK insisted on continuing his experiments. Cross and Imani had already embarked upon phase 1, it was time for them to begin phase 2. Cross’ body soaked belly up in the container, lifeless and seemingly dead while Imani thrashed and writhed among the forced ascension. A holographic screen formed in front of the three showing charts, graphs and other nominal means of measuring the progress. The voice came again. SILK’s voice.

“I’m sorry this had to happen this way. But you did hit me first.”

One chart was that of Cross, who’s vita signs were on the decline, flatlining, save for her heartbeat which held steady among this influx of energetic infestation. Imani’s readings were all over the place. In side her tube she seemed to be possessed by a puppeteer, her limbs tied to invisible strings that flailed her this way and that.

“Not sure about dumping you in… You’ll just have to die.”

SILK sounded skeptical, almost fearful of the instant encounter he had with Savaj. She’d best just lie there. So There Savaj was. On the floor between her two comrades spent and exhausted, helpless in their suffering.
